Bradenton Beach is the third city on Anna Maria Island and the southern most city before crossing Longboat Pass. Here wide sandy beaches touch the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico. This perfect harmony of nature is Coquina Beach, a 96-acre public recreational park.
In 1946 the famous Karl Wallenda, of the Flying Wallendas, was hired by a group of promoters to cross over Longboat Pass by high wire. The idea was to raise money to build a bridge over the pass. It seems everyone who attended had a good time including the men who absconded with all the money. A bridge was eventually built over the pass.
