The city of Holmes Beach covers the center portion of Anna Maria Island and is the business center of the island as well as the islands largest community.
Hollywood discovered the natural beauty of the island while filming the 1948 MGM film On an Island with You starring Esther Williams, Peter Lawford and Ricardo Montalban. In 1998 the island returned to the big screen as the stage for Palmetto starring Woody Harrelson, and later for the Denzel Washington film Out of Time.
